Slashing Canvases, Seizing Freedom: Enslaved People's Iconoclasm in the American South

During the American Civil War (1861-1865) hundreds of newly emancipated African Americans committed iconoclasm against images of their enslavers and their enslavers’ ancestors. Black iconoclasts destroyed some painted portraits outright, others they altered by scratching, tearing, or covering, and then displayed them in their own houses. At the war’s conclusion, returning white planters bargained with their former slaves to recover these canvases for their own memory making. Trauma encouraged southerners, white and Black, to manipulate painted canvases. Historical portraits thus offered powerful visual and material fields through which to seek restitution.
