Amateur gestures: decorating ceramics at the end of the nineteenth century.
Based on archival research on the Paris-based chemist Alphonse Lacroix and the phenomenon of decorating ceramics in the late nineteenth century, this talk investigates how the amateur mark or gesture was mediated through a complex array of guides, advice, and technologies. The paper will cover the interest in ceramic decoration as a leisure activity and relate this to broader historical contexts and currents in art practice.
